Meditation on Balance

Sometimes when I meditate, I have a hard time clearing my mind. Even trying to concentrate on single thought becomes arduous because my mind is so accustomed to thinking of many thoughts at one time.  It’s like a car race. They just go round and round all at the same time.

Some gurus suggest meditating for a certain amount of time each day.  That doesn’t work so well with my lifestyle. Not because I’m not committed to giving myself the gift of sitting in quiet, but because then my mind keeps returning to how much time has passed since I started. I find it so unnatural to live by a clock and schedules. It drives this dreamy Pisces nuts.  So instead, when I meditate, I just sit until my body and mind feel balanced. That’s the only goal I have.

I find (or make) a quiet space, I turn off the lights, I put on music such as the Yoga Pandora station, and sometimes I light a candle or incense to help create a calm energy in my space. I often times also keep a journal near by because I usually have amazing thoughts pop up in mind that I will soon forget if I don’t write them down immediately following meditation.

However, there are days when I just don’t have time for all that. Like today. I’m sitting in my office. Regretfully, I didn’t meditate first thing this morning. Instead, I told myself I could do it at work. But, hey, that’s just another lesson. I did the best I could in the present moment by turning off the lights and putting on that soothing music.  Still, I had a hard time calming my mind because I was already in work mode.

Here’s what I did and maybe it’ll help you.

  • Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths
  • With each breath in and each breath out concentrate on what you need in that moment. I often use, breathe in positivity and breath out negativity or breathe in calmness and breathe out chaos.
  • All I do is breathe, which would be happening anyway, God willing, so there’s really nothing extra I have to do.
  • I then imagine a line running through my body. I can physically feel if that line is off balance. I just keep breathing with my eyes closed until I feel like there is a balance. I can’t tell you how you’ll feel when you’ve achieved balance, but you’ll know it intuitively. You’ll just feel it.
  • Some days it takes me longer than others to get there. Usually, the more often I meditate, the faster I find my place of balance.

The point is to keep it simple and listen to your intuition with what’s right for you. Just follow it. Personally, I can’t listen to people telling me what to do in meditation, but I’ve never been one to listen to what people tell me to do anyway.  That doesn’t mean it won’t work for you so explore different meditation sound tracks.

Once you find that calm, still, point of balance, it’ll stay with you throughout the day. I find that I have more patience and care less about the little things or off-balanced people. I also find that I’m more productive with whatever my tasks are that day. So, go ahead and just breathe. Namaste.
